About
Saikokuji Temple in Onomichi holds one of the town's biggest Setsubun events on the day before the traditional start of spring. After a Buddhist service, men born in this year's zodiac sign throw beans while shouting "Fortune in, demons out!" to pray for health and a safe home in the year ahead. There's also a moment when participants chant and turn an enormous rosary, and rice cakes fly through the air along with the beans. Some bags of beans and rice cakes hide winning tickets for large, medium or small prizes, so the grounds get crowded with people trying to catch one. Children also get their own turn at throwing beans.
