About
For about six weeks in early spring, hina dolls, the ornamental figures displayed for Japan's Girls' Day, are set out across Takehara's historic preservation district. There are some 200 sets from the Edo period onward, treasured by the town's old families. As you stroll the old streets, you can see how the decorations, faces and sizes of the dolls changed over the eras. Koto and shamisen performances, food themed around the doll displays, and town walks led by a guide dressed as Princess Kaguya add to the experience. Note that some buildings charge for entry. The district is about a 15-minute walk from Takehara Station on the JR Kure Line.
