About
For three days in February, the streets north of JR Mihara Station fill with stalls for a market said to announce the coming of spring in Bingo. Shinmei festivals are held in honor of the deity of Ise Grand Shrine, and Mihara's is said to have been started near the end of the Muromachi period by the town's neighborhood groups working together. Expect crowds so dense that moving forward takes effort. It's also called the Daruma Market, and many local households still buy one daruma per family member to set on the home altar as a prayer for the household. Look for the giant daruma, 3.9 meters tall and weighing 500 kilograms, which serves as the festival's emblem.
