About
Yamanaka Onsen's biggest event of the year runs for two days in early autumn, when cool breezes blow through the Kakusenkei Gorge. For these two days the normally calm spa town bursts into colour. This is the home of the folk song Yamanaka-bushi, and locals, geisha and hot spring guests alike sing and dance together. By day the Koikoi mikoshi, carried by women, a mikoshi borne by young men and a giant lion make their way around town to energetic chanting. Roads near the venue are restricted, so drivers are directed to park at a temporary lot and ride the free shuttle bus.
