About

An old and somewhat unusual autumn festival in the Nakajima area of Nanao. It is the grand festival of Kumakabuto Shrine (formally Kumakabuto Arakashihiko Shrine), whose deity is said to have arrived from the Asian mainland, and it is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan as a wakubata festival, named for its framed banners. At the front of the procession, Sarutahiko in a long-nosed tengu mask dances to gongs and drums, leading the way. Behind come brawny young men carrying bright red banners that rise as high as 20m, an impressive sight. The festival is based at Kumakabuto Shrine, and parking is available at the festival hall nearby.
