About
Ogi, a fishing community in Noto Town, holds this kiriko lantern festival. Its lanterns, known as sode-kiriko, are big paper lanterns in the shape of a yakko kite, a form that is rarely seen elsewhere on the Noto Peninsula. Both sides carry paintings of warriors, and from their style some suggest a link to the nebuta lanterns or influence from the culture of the Sea of Japan coast. The lanterns used to be much bigger but were scaled down once power lines were strung through town. The climax comes when 9 sode-kiriko are shoved up the steep, narrow stairway that leads to Mifune Shrine, a show of the muscle and spirit of a fishing town.
