About

This is the annual grand festival of Hayachine Shrine in the Take district of Ohasama, Hanamaki, held in summer together with an eve festival the day before. The shrine honours the deity of Mt. Hayachine, and Take Kagura is the sacred dance dedicated to it. Together with Otsugunai Kagura it makes up Hayachine Kagura, designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 1976 and inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009. A lion mask dated 1595 survives at the shrine, and the tradition is said to be more than 500 years old. Take lies about 17 km northeast of central Ohasama and is the settlement closest to Mt. Hayachine – a chance to experience the mountain's kagura in its home village.
