About
Tsushima Shrine, beloved as a guardian of children's health and growth, stands on a tiny island off Mino in Mitoyo. Normally the island, about 250 m offshore, cannot be reached, but on August 4 and 5 a bridge is laid across so worshippers can walk to the main hall. Nicknamed the Bridge of Happiness, it is said to bring good fortune to children, young couples and married couples who cross it. From dawn until late at night, families stream across hand in hand or pushing strollers. On the night of August 4, fireworks go up and the lit shrine appears to float on the sea. Getting there is easiest via Tsushimanomiya Station, a temporary JR Yosan Line stop open only on these two days.
