About
Tanegashima marks the arrival of the first firearms in Japan, in 1543, with this yearly festival in Nishinoomote. It takes place at Nippo Minato Park, right beside Nishinoomote Port, so you can walk over straight off the high-speed ferry from Kagoshima, or drive in from Tanegashima Airport. A blast of matchlock fire usually starts the day, followed by a procession in nanban-style costume, matchlock shooting demonstrations and a talent show, all fitting for the island where guns first landed in Japan. After dark, about 6,000 fireworks (planned) burst over the clear island sky, with a boom you can feel in your chest.
