About
Each summer, Hinokamiyama Wharf at Miyanoura Port becomes the stage for one of Yakushima's largest festivals. Its purpose is to pass on the traditions and culture that grew from the island's long-standing reverence for its mountains. A rite unique to this festival has fire lit in two places, one group on the mountain side and one on the sea side. Stage shows, including Goshinzan taiko drumming, fill out the program. On the second day, fireworks and other events draw crowds to the harbor after dark. A festival committee runs the event, with its office at the Yakushima Town Chamber of Commerce.
