About
Plum season in Odawara is celebrated at two sites, Odawara Castle Park and the Soga Plum Grove. Soga, the main one, has about 35,000 trees, and since they are grown for their fruit, nearly all the flowers are white. When the air is clear, Mount Fuji stands behind the blossoms. Plums are said to have been planted near the castle in the Hojo era as army provisions, and the Okubo lords of the Edo period encouraged growing them. Local farmers run the grove, which has souvenir stalls, food and a stage for events, and historic spots tied to the Soga brothers, such as Jozenji Temple, are close by.
