About
Ume no Utage is the plum blossom festival at Makuyama Park in Yugawara, at the foot of Mount Makuyama, 626 m high. About 4,000 red and white plum trees cover the lower slopes, turning them into patches of crimson and white with a gentle scent in the air. Look for the unusual trees that bear both red and white flowers. If you feel energetic, a hiking trail climbs through the blossoms toward the summit. Stalls at the base sell Yugawara produce, souvenirs, plum soft-serve and hot amazake. Weekends and holidays bring geisha dances and performances of folk songs and Tsugaru shamisen. Admission is charged during the festival.
