About
On November 22 (the eve) and November 23 (the main day), Udono Shrine in Kiho holds its grand festival, an unusual celebration linked to the Kumano navy. The whole of Udono becomes the stage: the rites take place at the shrine, the portable shrine tours the streets, and the sea ritual is held on the shore in front of Fureai Kaikan. Boat-shaped floats, portable shrines and a mass Udono-bayashi dance parade through town, along with hari-hari dances, Kumano Suigun taiko and a rice-cake scatter. The biggest highlight is the misogi purification. Watching is free, and the closest station is JR Udono.
