About
Matsusaka's citizens' festival celebrates Gamo Ujisato, the man who founded the town. The star attraction is a warrior procession of more than 200 people. After a departure ceremony at the Matsusaka Castle ruins, a National Historic Site, Ujisato, his wife Princess Fuyu, the later castle lords Hattori Kazutada, Furuta Shigekatsu and Furuta Shigeharu, armored samurai and a musket squad march past the Gojoban Yashiki row houses and the samurai homes of the old Doshin-machi. Ujisato became the first lord of Matsusaka Castle about 400 years ago and laid the groundwork for Matsusaka as a merchant town; he is still cherished as a local hero, and the festival began after World War II to honor his work. Downtown stages feature the Shongai Ondo song and dance, and the Rakuichi Rakuza market is packed with stalls. It is a short walk from JR/Kintetsu Matsusaka Station.
