About
Each summer around 2,000 dancers from all over Japan descend on Hyuga to perform the comic hyottoko dance. The dance is a folk art handed down in the Shiomi Nagata area of the city and is a city-designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property. It acts out a funny story about a couple who long for a child and the Inari deity, who appears as a fox. Dancers wear hyottoko, okame or fox masks, red kimono with white sashes and spotted hand towels tied around their heads, and wiggle their hips as they go. Teams compete on the beauty of their dancing and how well they move together. The eve event is an individual competition, the main day brings the parade, and food stalls are set up around the venue.
