About
On a summer night, Cape Toi in Kushima hosts a fire festival. The main event is the hashiramatsu: burning torches are flung up, one after another, at a target on top of a pole about 30 meters tall. The arcs of flame across the night sky, and the roar when a torch lands in the top, are something you need to see in person. There are also stage events and food and drink. The festival held its 60th edition in 2026. Cape Toi is home to the wild Misaki horses, and a donation toward their protection is asked of vehicles entering the cape. On festival day, cars cannot enter the cape from late afternoon to avoid congestion, so use the temporary parking lots or the shuttle buses, including those from the Michi-no-Eki Kushima roadside station.
