About
Centred on November 23 each year, this festival in Miyakonojo takes place at the Miyakonojo Shimazu Residence, Shimazu Shoen and other sites, with a local executive committee leading the preparations. The one not to miss is the Meidokan Parade, a procession through the streets of people dressed as generations of Shimazu clan heads and their samurai. Food and local-product stalls are set up at the venues, and entry is free. It goes ahead in light rain and is called off in stormy weather. The Shimazu Residence is about a 7- to 10-minute walk from JR Miyakonojo Station on the Nippo Line; by bus, get off at Izumigaoka Koko-mae or Sogo Bunka Hall-mae and walk about 4 minutes.
