About
The Saitobaru Burial Mounds, a Special Historic Site of Japan and part of a Japan Heritage designation, host this festival themed on ancient times. More than 300 mounds built between the third and seventh centuries are scattered across the plateau. The big moment is the torch procession: about 500 people in ancient costume carry torches along the roughly 4 km Kiki-no-Michi path, which links places from the Hyuga myths, and anyone can join in. At the Fire Festival, a love story of the gods is told through dance and music. The imperial tombs open to the public only once a year, at this festival, and you can also try making fire or making magatama beads.
