About
Deep in the mountains, the village of Shiiba is said to be where Heike survivors hid after their defeat by the Genji at the Battle of Dannoura, and this festival restages the doomed love between Nasu no Daihachiro of the Genji and the Heike princess Tsurutomi. Their story lives on in the local folk song Hietsuki-bushi. The festival runs over two days, and the high point is the grand warrior procession on the second day: Princess Tsurutomi in layered court robes and Daihachiro in armour on horseback lead a splendid retinue and a parade of local performing arts through the village. The Tsurutomi-hime Horaku-sai memorial for the princess, with Shinto rites, kagura and biwa lute music, has a dreamlike feel. With local products and food on offer as well, tens of thousands of visitors come to this usually quiet, remote village.
