About
Matsuura is said to be where the Mongol invasions of Japan, the campaigns of Bun'ei and Koan, finally ended, and this festival, in which the whole city takes part, honors the Matsuura-to, or Matsuura navy, who held off the invaders and protected their homeland. It grew from an industry fair launched in 1982 into the region's leading festival. The main attraction is a parade of warriors recreating the days of the Matsuura navy, turning the streets into a scene from history. Performances of Matsuura Ryuo taiko, the Mikuriya dragon dance and YOSAKOI follow, and the stage features music, dance and marching bands. The festival is centered around Matsuura City Hall, about 7 minutes on foot from Matsuura Station on the Matsuura Railway. In 2026 it is held on October 24 and October 25.
