About

Banshoin, a national historic site in Izuhara on Tsushima, opens for one evening a year for this festival. The temple was built by So Yoshinari, lord of the Tsushima domain, for his father Yoshitoshi, and serves as the family temple of the So clan. On this night, about 350 lanterns along the 123 stone steps called Hyakugangi are lit to honor the spirits of the So family. Rows of lights glowing in the dark give the old stairway a quiet, otherworldly beauty. It is the one night of the year when the temple can be visited after dark, a chance not to be missed. The festival is usually held in October and is cancelled if it rains. Inquiries go to the Banshoin Historic Site Preservation Society.
