About
On Ukujima, the autumn festival of Kojima Shrine, long cherished as the guardian shrine of the Taira district, is known locally as Okunchi. Giving thanks for a good harvest and big catches, the deity's procession travels through town as a powerful mikoshi portable shrine is carried along the streets. The parishioners' dancing neighborhoods join in, and floats and dedicated dances make the festival even more colorful. It is a day that shows how island life and the gifts of the sea are bound together. It is usually held on the third Saturday and Sunday of October, and in 2026 it takes place from October 17 to October 18. Kojima Shrine is located in Taira, Uku Town.
