About
On a summer evening, crowds of dancers in bright costumes fill the Tsurusaki Park grounds in Oita City. Their dancing to bamboo flutes and the kokyu, a bowed string instrument, makes a gorgeous sight and draws many spectators. Tsurusaki Odori is a local dance said to have been passed down in Tsurusaki for about 460 years, and the national government has selected it as an intangible folk cultural property. The event is run by the Tsurusaki Odori preservation society, which keeps the dance alive.
