About
The summer grand festival of Chichibu Shrine, guardian shrine of all Chichibu, also goes by the name Ogion. If the winter Chichibu Night Festival belongs to the adults, this one belongs to the children. For two days, four kasaboko and four yatai floats tour the town to the sound of festival music. On the evening of July 19, the Tenno Hashiradate rite at the shrine welcomes the deity Susanoo, and offertory fireworks rise from Hitsujiyama Park. July 20 is the main day: parishioners carry the portable shrine to the riverside ritual ground on the Arakawa River and jostle it in the water. This "mikoshi washing" is said to carry off every kind of misfortune, and it gives the Kawase ("river shallows") Festival its name.
