About

Kumagaya's Yasaka Shrine holds its grand festival over three days, when 12 dazzling floats and yatai parade through the city to the beat of Kumagaya festival music, which is why it is called the greatest Gion festival in Kanto. Things kick off on the first day with the opening drum battle in front of Kumagaya Station, and wrap up on the final day when the floats gather at the festival plaza for a last drum battle and the handover of hosting duties to the next year's district. The festival is thought to have taken its present form from the mid-Edo period on.
