About
Kawagoe, nicknamed Little Edo, closes the streets from around Hon-Kawagoe Station, through the warehouse-lined Ichibangai district, to the Fudanotsuji intersection for this summer festival. From late afternoon into the night you'll find dance events, festival music contests, a historical procession, and stalls and activities put on by the shopping streets. The story goes back to the end of the Edo period: in the first Obon after the death of Matsudaira Naritsune, lord of Kawagoe Castle, the daughter of a family he had helped hung a kiriko lantern at their door, and in time the whole town took up a lantern festival in his memory. It lapsed for a while, returned in 1960 and has carried its present name since 1982.
