About
The autumn festival of Osato Hachiman Shrine honors the guardian deity of the entire Kaifu River basin. Its signature moment comes when sekibune boat floats and danjiri carts race across the pine-fringed beach to gongs and drums, throwing up clouds of sand. After the Shinto rites and the danjiri's entry into the shrine, the portable shrine, danjiri and boat floats all head down to the shore, joined by lion dancers, tengu goblins and mounted archers. In the evening, fireworks are offered from the Kaifu River bed. Volunteers are sought for the women's danjiri, which hauls a cart to the deity. Food stalls set up for the day. Park at Awa-Kainan Bunkamura and take the shuttle bus to near the shrine; street parking is discouraged because it gets in the way of the danjiri.
