About
Hiwasa Hachiman Shrine in the Hiwasa area of Minami holds this autumn festival to pray for big catches, safety at sea and good harvests. With roughly 230 years of history behind it, it ranks among Tokushima's leading autumn festivals. The stars are eight chosa drum floats. The big moment is Ohamade on the morning of the main day, when the portable shrine and chosa rush onto Ohama Beach, a well-known sea turtle nesting site, and are paraded on the sand. On the eve, the portable shrine and chosa make their way around town, and the night features shrine maiden dances, children's sumo and offertory performances, followed by fireworks. On the main day the procession returns to the shrine in the afternoon, and the festival closes with a ceremonial hand-clap in the evening. You can follow the chosa floats' locations on a web map.
