About
On an autumn night, the people of the Akamatsu district in Minami offer handmade fukizutsu fireworks at Akamatsu Shrine, a tradition designated an intangible folk cultural property of Tokushima Prefecture. Members of the Akamatsu fireworks preservation society form teams by neighborhood and build every firework themselves: a bamboo tube around a meter long, packed with gunpowder, that spits sparks from a hole at the top. The teams vie for the most beautiful spray. The moment to see is when members of the local youth group run through the falling sparks under flames reaching about 10 meters, calling out "Dekitan, doshitan" to each other. The rite carries hopes for a good harvest and household safety in the coming year. It gets very crowded around the shrine, so visitors are asked to carpool.
