About

The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival grew out of the Edo-period "Ryogoku river opening." After the great famine and epidemics of 1732, the shogunate held a water god festival to comfort the dead and ward off disease, and the next year restaurants near Ryogoku Bridge received permission to launch fireworks, which is considered the start. The river opening, held upstream of Ryogoku Bridge, stopped after 1961 because of worsening traffic, but returned in 1978 as the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival. The launch sites have since moved farther upstream, and fireworks now go up from two sites, the first and second venues. The show is called off in stormy weather, and whether it goes ahead is normally decided at 8 a.m. on the day.
