About
For three days every year, July 6 to 8, a morning glory fair takes place in the Iriya and Shitaya area of Taito City, a sure sign that summer has arrived in Tokyo. From around Iriya Kishimojin (Shingen-ji Temple) to Kototoi-dori, about 30 morning glory growers and nearly 100 festival stalls set up, and visitors come from early morning. Iriya's morning glories are said to have gained fame near the end of the Edo period, and by the mid-Meiji era their quality had made them popular ornamental plants. They vanished from Iriya for a time in the Taisho era, but in 1948, wanting to brighten postwar life even a little, local volunteers and the Shitaya Tourism Federation brought the fair back. The Shitaya Tourism Federation and the Iriya Morning Glory Committee organize it.
