About
Every July 9 and 10, about 100 stalls selling hozuki (Chinese lantern plants) fill the grounds of Senso-ji in Asakusa, wind chimes ring out, and the crowds linger late into the night. The temple observes one "merit day" a month, and a visit on July 10 is said to earn the merit of 46,000 days, hence the name Shimanrokusennichi. In the Edo period people began flocking in from July 9, the day before, and both days are now part of the fair. The hozuki market, timed to coincide, is said to date from the Meiwa era. Only on these two days, the temple offers a prayer charm in yellow wrapping called kifuda and a triangular charm against lightning held in a bamboo stick.
