About

On the night of August 17, the Ebi area of Kofu Town holds an Obon festival handed down for some 500 years. Legend has it that the Hachizuka lords of Ebi Castle threw open their gates on the seventeenth night of the Obon season, inviting townspeople and farmers in to dance and wrestle alongside them until dawn, remembering the dead and wishing for a rich harvest. When the castle later fell, people went on dancing in their lord's memory. The core of the night is the Kodaiji Odori, an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Tottori Prefecture. On the mountain across the Hino River the characters for "Jushichiya" burn in fire, and fireworks from the town sports park boom around the valley to bring things to a close. Ebi Shrine also hosts a children's sumo tournament, and floats built around the year's talking points go on display.
