About
Hamamura Onsen in Tottori City's Ketaka district builds its summer festival around Kaigarabushi, the folk song of this stretch of coast. It is said to be the song fishermen sang at the oars back when scallops were hauled up in vast numbers offshore, and after being recorded in 1933 it became known as Hamamura's signature tune. The dance that goes with it faded away during the war, until in 1947 Shizuko Nomura, who had been evacuated to Hamamura, created new steps simple enough for visitors to join. Alongside Kaigarabushi dancing, the festival serves up the Sea of Japan in many forms: beach-seine net hauling, the local araiso-yaki, and fireworks over the water. It lasts two days, starting at Funaiso Beach and moving to Hamamura Onsen the next day.
