About
Yonago's signature summer festival was launched in 1974 as a fresh kind of celebration and runs for about three days each year. Its centerpiece since the very first year has been the closing fireworks show at Yonago Port. The organizers point to a series of bold attempts over the years: western Japan's first giant three-shaku shell, a Guinness-recognized set piece stretching 1,711 meters (the same as Mt. Daisen's height), and underwater fireworks fired from a barge on Lake Nakaumi. Also worth seeing are Gaina Manto, lantern poles inspired by Akita's Kanto festival, and the Yonago Gaina Taiko, a local drumming art that was born at this festival. A market and other events also run during the festival.
