About
On the first Friday and Saturday nights of June, the Tsuzawa district of Oyabe prays for rich harvests and peace in the land with a lantern festival. When the dengaku lanterns hanging from the eaves are lit at dusk, children set off first pulling small lanterns, and then young men shoulder the giant ones, keeping time with drums and shouts. These yotaka lanterns are handmade from bamboo and washi paper in the shapes of dragons, flower baskets and more, and reach about 6 meters high and 10 meters long. The big event is the clash: two giant lanterns face off, and at the cry of "Sosaikyo!" they crash together, each side trying to wreck the other's hanging ornaments, which is why it is also nicknamed the "Fighting Yotaka Festival." Bouts continue with new opponents in the Andon Plaza from 9 p.m. until late at night.
