About
Known fondly as "Sanno-san," the spring grand festival of Hie Shrine in Toyama City runs from May 31 to June 2 each year. In the Edo period the shrine served as guardian of the entire Toyama domain, and tradition says its portable shrine was carried right into Toyama Castle while the whole castle town celebrated. The two portable shrines donated in 1690 by the domain's second lord, Maeda Masatoshi, were destroyed in the 1945 air raids, so today a single portable shrine makes the procession. Accompanied by lion dancers, it visits the western side of the parish on May 31 and the eastern side on June 1. About 500 food stalls spread from the shrine into the surrounding streets, where you can taste old festival favorites like anbayashi, a miso-glazed konnyaku skewer. Roads nearby are restricted, so walk or take the tram (about five minutes from Nishicho or Grand Plaza-mae stops) rather than driving.
