About
On the second Friday and Saturday nights of June, central Tonami comes alive with a lantern festival said to have started in the Taisho era as a prayer for an abundant harvest. Bright red yotaka lanterns over six meters tall move through the streets as young people and children call out "Yoiyasa!", with wooden clappers and drums driving the mood. The first night is a contest judging the lanterns, and on the second the big lanterns smash into each other in the tsukiawase, the peak of the whole festival. Everything happens just outside Tonami Station on the JR Johana Line. Traffic is restricted in the center, so visitors are asked not to drive.
