About
This fire festival in Hikari is said to have started in the Edo period with prayers for abundant harvests and an end to epidemics. It takes place on the banks of the Shimada River around Asahi Bridge, where the river runs out to Nijigahama Beach. At the top of each 15-meter pole sits a funnel-shaped basket made of moso bamboo and packed with bush clover leaves, charms and fireworks, and participants throw burning torches upward, aiming to land them inside. When all the poles are ablaze, fireworks go up and falling sparks light the riverbank in a dreamlike glow. It is a festival to enjoy at an easy pace on a summer evening.
