About

Yamaguchi's summer lantern festival grew out of the Bon lanterns of the Ouchi clan and is said to have begun about 600 years ago. In the Muromachi period, so the story goes, Ouchi Moriharu lit tall lanterns on bamboo on an Obon night to pray for his ancestors' souls. For the festival's 2 days, tens of thousands of red lanterns hung from bamboo crowd the central shopping streets and the area around the Ichinosaka River plaza, turning the streets into tunnels of crimson light. Lantern floats travel through town, and stage events and food trucks round out a classic Yamaguchi summer.
