About
One of the three great summer festivals of Tohoku and a designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, the Aomori Nebuta Festival fills central Aomori every year from August 2 to 7, whatever the day of the week. Floats known as ningyo nebuta parade through the streets, followed by crowds of dancers called haneto who leap and chant "Rassera! Rassera!". Floats roll out on the evenings of August 2–6 (joined by children's floats on August 2 and 3). On the final day there is a daytime parade, and at night the prize-winning floats sail around Aomori Port on barges while more than 10,000 fireworks burst overhead. Best of all, anyone can join in as a haneto if you follow the rules, and costumes can be bought or rented at local department stores.
