About
This traditional festival brightens summer in the town of Noheji. When Kitamaebune merchant ships regularly called at Noheji, they brought not only goods but also customs and culture from the Kyoto-Osaka region, and the Gion festival was one of them, which is why its music sounds so much like that of Kyoto's Gion Festival. The festival lasts four days. On the first, a giant sacred rope is offered to Hachimangu Shrine; on the second, ornate floats depicting kabuki and Chinese legends roll through town to the elegant Gion music played by children in festive dress. The third day brings a procession at sea, and on the final day the floats parade together once more as the whole town gives itself over to the festival.
