About

One of Japan's three great street-dance festivals, Kuroishi Yosare is a summer tradition with deep roots. Every year in mid-August, locals and visitors from across Aomori and beyond dance late into the night. The festival combines three styles: the nagashi odori, danced in procession along the streets; the mawari odori, in which dancers form a circle and pull spectators into the whirl; and the kumi odori, where troupes from the surrounding villages perform Tsugaru folk dances to shamisen, drums and song. Newly choreographed dances have joined in recent years, making the atmosphere livelier than ever. The street dance sets off through town at 7 p.m.
