About

As summer ends in Eiheiji Town, about 6,000 lanterns sent from across Japan float down the Kuzuryu River, each inscribed with thanks to ancestors, prayers for the dead or a personal wish. By day the riverside hosts a family fair with a bazaar, local food stalls, a kids' area and stage shows. After dark, about 100 monks from Daihonzan Eiheiji hold a great memorial service, reading out every posthumous name written on the lanterns before releasing them onto the river. The resulting ribbon of light is listed among Japan's 100 best night views. You can sign up on the day to float a lantern of your own, and box seats are available. The site is about 10 minutes on foot from Shimoshihi Station on the Echizen Railway; crowds are heavy, so public transport is advised.
