About

The port town of Mikuni puts on a summer fireworks show that uses the Sea of Japan as its stage. Large shells rise one after another from offshore, and the trademark underwater fireworks open into huge half-circles on the water. Viewing areas are Mikuni Sunset Beach and the Kuzuryu River Boat Park, with paid seats and shuttle buses available; any postponement is announced on the official website and social media by 9:00 on the day. The show began before World War II, stopped during the war and again after oil storage tanks were built near the site, and was brought back in 1981 by local volunteers who set up a committee; the community has kept it going since. The forty-fourth show, planned for 2026, was cancelled because an approaching typhoon threatened strong winds and high waves.
