About
In the town of Mishima, a winter festival lights up the night with fire. The centerpiece is a re-creation, kept as close to the original as possible, of the Sainokami, a fire ritual designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. After dark the Sainokami is lit and fireworks burst above the flames, while snow-country events and food stalls fill the grounds. On February 21, 2026, the festival was held for the fifty-third time, with the fire lit from 18:00 and fireworks from 18:00 to 18:20. It is held on the plaza in front of the Yamabiko Community Center, its home since the previous year, about 20 minutes on foot from Aizu-Nishikata Station on the JR Tadami Line. Contact the festival committee at the Mishima Tourism Association.
