About
In February, deep snow covers Ouchi-juku in Shimogo, a former post town of thatched houses that keeps its Edo-period look and is a nationally designated preservation district. For the snow festival, residents line the old street with handmade snow lanterns. At nightfall each one is lit, the snowbound houses glow softly, and fireworks go up overhead. Daytime events include what is billed as Japan's largest dango skewer, taiko drumming and a soba-eating contest. The 2026 festival was held on February 14 and 15, with the illuminations starting the evening of February 13. Ouchi-juku is about 15 minutes by car from Yunokami-Onsen Station on the Aizu Railway. The Ouchi-juku Tourism Association handles inquiries.
