About
Every February 11, the streets around Shirakawa Station fill with shoppers hunting for daruma dolls. The market is said to go back more than 300 years, and around 500 stalls sell lucky charms, plants and festival food as well as the dolls. Shirakawa daruma are known for their round, cheerful faces, a design said to have been drawn up by the painter Tani Buncho at the request of the lord Matsudaira Sadanobu. Of the markets once held along five streets of the old Oshu Kaido highway, the one in Naka-machi came to be known as the daruma market as daruma took over its stalls. On the same day, dondo-yaki bonfires in Tenjin-machi and Hon-machi burn New Year decorations and old daruma. The 2026 market was held on February 11.
