About
Each autumn for 2 days, Sekigahara, home to the site of the Battle of Sekigahara, stages its samurai festival. At its heart is the Sekigahara Battle Scroll, in which armored warriors from around Japan tell the story of the battle in three acts: taking positions, a grand procession of the whole army, and the battle itself. The Eastern and Western armies set up at Sasaoyama, Ishida Mitsunari and Tokugawa Ieyasu ride to Jinbano, and a large-cast drama with an original script replays the fighting. Also on the program are a gun corps firing real matchlocks, local schoolchildren recounting the battle with sword dance and narrated drumming, samurai troupes from around Japan, warring-states-themed live music, and a closing rice-cake scramble.
