About

The autumn Takayama Festival, also called the Hachiman Festival, is held around Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine on October 9 and 10 every year. In 2016 its float event was inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage as the Takayama Matsuri yatai float event. The ornate floats, built with the skill of Hida's master craftsmen, take center stage: karakuri puppets perform delicate mechanical moves, and the floats are swung around using a special wheel, both best appreciated up close. A shrine procession also makes its way through town. On the first evening only, the floats carry glowing lanterns as they roll slowly through the streets. Cars are barred from the festival area, so come by shuttle bus or similar.
